UPS

Έχω πάει σε κάτι πελάτες, πολύ βλάκες και πολύ γκαντέμιδες, που έχουν ένα pc που κολλάει διαρκώς και κάνει restart, και αρκετά συχνά αυτά είναι προβλήματα τροφοδοσίας, οπότε τους έχουμε συμβουλέψει (εγώ και η εταιρεία που δούλευα τότε) να πάρουν ένα UPS.

(παρένθεση για όσους δεν γνωρίζουν, UPS σημαίνει Uninterrupted Power Supply) ελληνιστί Συσκευή Αδιάλειπτης Τροφοδοσίας, πολύ απλά μια μπαταρία που παρεμβάλλεται μεταξύ της πρίζας της ΔΕΗ και του υπολογιστή και κάνει συνήθως δύο δουλειές: πρώτα από όλα, αν κοπεί το ρεύμα, δίνει ρεύμα στον υπολογιστή για κάνα δεκάλεπτο μέχρι να προλάβεις να σώσεις, και δεύτερο, φιλτράρει και το ρεύμα της ΔΕΗ πριν αυτό πάει στον υπολογιστή και το "στρώνει")

Οι άνθρωποι έχουν πάρει ένα UPS, το έχουν συνδέσει, και συνεχίζουν να παραπονιούνται...

Πάω λοιπόν μια βόλτα από εκεί μια παρασκευή για την προγραμματισμένη συντήρηση και μου αρχίζουν τη γκρίνια: "κολλάει", "κάνει επανεκκίνηση" και τα γνωστά...

"Για να δω το UPS", τους λέω.

Και μου το δείχνουν.

Πρώτα απ' όλα, είχαν αγοράσει μια χειροποίητη μαλακία που έμοιαζε με μετρητή ραδιενέργειας (αντί για καμιά γνωστή μάρκα όπως APC)

Δεύτερον, την είχαν συνδέσει στη πρίζα, αλλά...

ΔΕΝ είχαν συνδέσει τον υπολογιστή στο UPS, τον είχαν αφήσει όπως τον είχαν και πριν...

Προφανώς νόμισαν ότι το UPS λειτουργεί περίπου όπως ο απιονιστής, ή όπως ένα ηλεκτρικό σώμα...

Τον βάζεις στην πρίζα και σου φτιάχνει το ρεύμα.

Nice...

Έκτοτε κάνω το εξής test για να μετρήσω την αντίληψη που έχουν για τον φυσικό κόσμο οι διάφοροι πελάτες μου:

Αφήνω τη μία άκρη του καλωδίου του υπολογιστή στην πρίζα, τραβάω την άλλη άκρη από το πίσω μέρος του υπολογιστή, (έτσι ώστε να έχω ένα καλώδιο που να είναι στην πρίζα, αλλά να μην καταλήγει πουθενά, κάτι σαν λάστιχο ποτίσματος), γυρνάω το καλώδιο έτσι ώστε η ελεύθερη άκρη να κοιτάει το πάτωμα και τους ρωτάω:

"Έχουμε τώρα διαρροή; Πέφτει ρεύμα στο πάτωμα;"

WorkRave

A colleague of mine told me about this. It's a nice little opensource program that sits in the background and notifies you when it's time to break away from your keyboard.
The Fun Part: It has excercises you can do to strech you fingers, arms and shoulders and avoid CTS.
The Even-Better part: everybody started using it at work, so every now and then, if you take a look around you, you see someone looking intensly at his screen while at the same time trying to perform the exercise shown to him...

Pricket

Charis set up an old machine of mine as a Linux server, to use for remote access to my home LAN, now with the DSL and all. Machine's name is Pricket (little prick? how suitable...) and can be reached at zkeramid.ath.cx (thanxs to dyndsn.org). Not much on it yet... But there will be.

Too Many Secrets

There is a 1992 movie with Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Ben Kingsley and others.
The movie is called "Sneakers" and along with "War Games" (1983), it's one of the few movies that portray hackers and computer security in a reallistic manner.

There is a non-existant company in the movie called "Setec Astronomy". Turns out, that company's name don't mean anything. It's just an anagram of the phrase "Too many secrets".

Sunday was Paintball Day. Everybody's hurting, and I even got a couple of blood-red bruises on my legs. Was really fun, though.
